My Changing Perspective on Road Trips

San Candido, Italy

From Fearing to Embracing the Open Road

Road trips used to be something I couldn't quite wrap my head around. The idea of spending hours in a car, instead of hopping on a plane and reaching my destination quickly, seemed like a waste of time. However, my perspective has undergone a complete transformation after experiencing a few unforgettable road trips. Let me take you on a journey of discovery as I share my evolving thoughts on road trips and the joys they bring.

My road trip adventure began with a 10-day exploration of my home country, Romania. Opting for familiar terrain allowed me to ease into the experience. As the miles rolled by, I started to appreciate the freedom and flexibility that road trips offer. It was a revelation despite all the let’s say obstacles: although a beautiful country, Romania is not famous for its good roads except for some (like Transfăgărășan).

With each road trip, my appetite for roadtriping grew. I found myself planning a 3-week escapade with my two kids, covering six countries and spanning a whopping 6000 kilometers. It was an ambitious undertaking, but it was fantastic! One of the best vacantions that we had as a family. These are some of the things I have learned about roadtrips.

Tips and Tricks for a Successful Road Trip with Kids:

  1. Plan Ahead: The key to a successful road trip, especially with small kids, is meticulous planning. Research your route, pinpoint interesting stops along the way, and pre-book accommodations to ensure a smooth journey.

  2. Pack Smart:

    • Make sure to pack essentials like snacks, water, entertainment for the kids (car games), and a first aid kit.

    • I have prepared a box with their most-loved toys and books for the car. I placed it between the two of them so they can easily reach and take out what they like and keep everything organized as much as possible along the way.

    • Car organizers can also be a good idea!

    • Choose accommodations that provide cleaning services or have a washing machine and/or dryer - this way you can pack light and wash clothes if needed, especially if you have a longer trip with small kids.

  3. Take Breaks: Long hours in the car can be tiring, so schedule regular breaks to stretch your legs and relax. Remember: it's the journey that counts here, not just the destination.

  4. Make sure to have at least 2-3 nights in one place: we only had 1-night stops on the first and last nights. Otherwise, we are taking our time and avoiding packing and unpacking for less than 3 days.

  5. Scatter kid-friendly activities throughout your trip: something for them to enjoy and look forward to at the next destination.

  6. Embrace Spontaneity: While planning is important, and my first rule is to plan ahead as much as possible, be open to detours and unexpected discoveries along the way, and leave room for spontaneity.

Road trips have transformed from a puzzling concept to an integral part of my travel repertoire. The freedom, flexibility, and sense of adventure they provide are truly unparalleled. Whether it's a short escapade or an extended expedition, hitting the open road allows you to savor every moment, and create lifelong memories. So, pack your bags, buckle up, and let the road guide you to extraordinary experiences.
