Which is The Best Ski Resort for You or Your Family ?

Les Trois Vallées, France

Where to Find the Best Ski Slopes and Ski Resorts?

When it comes to planning a ski vacation and if you are not fortunate enough to live near a local ski resort and have quick access to winter fun without extensive travel, Europe offers a wide range of options. Consider your budget, the type of resort you prefer, available amenities, the profile of your fellow travelers, and your expectations in terms of slopes and you are sure to find the resort to suit varying tastes and needs. Here are a few that I think cover various budgets and expectations:

  1. Low Budget: Bansko, Bulgaria

    • Offers excellent value for money with affordable accommodations and lift passes.

  2. Family-Friendly: Avoriaz, France

    • Known for its car-free village, Avoriaz offers a family-friendly environment with dedicated beginner slopes, childcare services, and a variety of off-slope activities.

  3. Expert Skiers: Verbier, Switzerland

    • Renowned for challenging terrain and off-piste options, Verbier is a paradise for expert skiers seeking a thrilling experience.

  4. Charming Alpine Village: Zermatt, Switzerland

    • Nestled at the base of the iconic Matterhorn, Zermatt provides a picturesque alpine setting with a mix of family-friendly and challenging slopes.

  5. All-Inclusive Luxury: Courchevel, France

    • Perfect for those seeking a high-end experience, Courchevel offers luxury accommodations, gourmet dining, and access to the extensive Les Trois Vallées ski area.

  6. Best Family-Friendly: Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Austria

    • Known for its exceptional family-friendly amenities, this Austrian resort provides specialized kids' programs, gentle slopes for beginners, and a charming village atmosphere, ensuring an enjoyable experience for the entire family.

How do you choose?

  1. Budget

Evaluate the overall budget, including accommodation costs, ski passes, equipment rental, and potential additional expenses.

  2. Accessibility and Transportation:

    • Assess the accessibility of the resort, taking into account travel time, ease of transportation, and proximity to airports or major cities.

  3. Ski Terrain Suited for All Skill Levels:

    • Consider the ski terrain offered by the resort, ensuring it is suitable for all travellers, from beginners to experienced skiers.

    • If travelling with kids, look for resorts with dedicated beginner slopes, reliable ski schools, and diverse options for varying skill levels, allowing everyone to enjoy the slopes at their own pace.

  4. Family-Friendly Atmosphere and Amenities:

    • Assess the overall family-friendly atmosphere of the resort, including family-oriented activities, such as therme resorts oher activities that are, at least in our group of friends and family, very appreciated.

  5. Diverse Off-Slope Activities:

    • Consider the availability of off-slope activities beyond skiing, such as snowshoeing, ice skating, or other experiences.

No matter what you choose, make sure to plan ahead to find the best options for you and your fellow travellers, the best prices and if, you plan on booking any sky lessons, make sure your have a spot for you or your kids.

When Do You Go?

For families planning a ski vacation, it's essential to choose a period when there are no school holidays (to avoid the crowds) and when there is plenty of snow. The ideal time for ensuring both is mid-February. However, it can be challenging to check all these factors off your list. Opting for a large ski resort might help you avoid traffic jams on the slopes, but when it comes to weather, it is pretty much a gamble.

How to Calculate Your Budget

Planning a family ski vacation involves budget considerations. O n average, a realistic budget for a family of two adults and two kids ranges from €3000 to €5000 for a week-long stay. This includes accommodation, ski passes, equipment rental, meals, and miscellaneous expenses. Prices may vary depending on the type of accommodation, you spending habbits and the period of you choose for your ski holiday.

Our Pick for This Season

Our latest pick for our ski vacation was one of the world's largest ski areas: Les Trois Valles, France with 600km of slopes to discover. During our escapade, we settled in Brides les Baines that is 30 minutes cable car away from Méribeland has very budget friendly options in terms of accomodation.

Accomodation

We found the perfect apartment for our family and firends - Résidence Alticimes. However, aside from finding the perfect setup at a very good price, we found the Brides les Baines to be very limited in terms of options for non-skiers. If you're looking for a more diverse experience, we recommend staying in Meribel. Known for its lively atmosphere, Méribeloffers a range of accommodation options, from cozy chalets to family-friendly hotels. The town is also strategically located, providing easy access to the expansive ski terrain.

Transportation

To reach Les Trois Vallées from Bucharest, the most convenient option is to fly to Geneva, Switzerland, (other good options being Lyon or Turin) and then take a transfer to Méribel. Direct flights from Bucharest to Geneva are available, and the transfer from the airport to your ski resort can be easily arranged through various services. If you choose to fly to Geneva, Lyon, or Turin, keep in mind that Geneva appears to be the only one renting cars already equipped with winter tires (you will need either winter tires or winter socks for your car, as per the applicable law in France).

We loved the extensive ski slopes in Les Trois Vallées. We will definitely come back. Next time, I think we will choose to stay in Méribel or, hopefully, if the budget allows, in Courchevel. I hope my notes helped you get a better idea of your ski resort options—there are so many, and you might sometimes feel a bit lost. I know I do!
